Chemical safety data sheet (MSDS)
MSDS, material safety data sheet, can be referred to as MSDs. It is a data instruction for manufacturers and importers to clarify the physical and chemical characteristics of products, which may cause harm to users. The MSDS describes the toxicity, hazard and environmental impact assessment of the chemicals contained in the product. This paper introduces the precautions in the production, use, storage and transportation of products as well as the emergency handling methods. Reducing the probability of accidents and the loss caused by accidents has become a safety management system.
MSDS generally includes the following contents:
1. Material product name and manufacturer contact information;
2. Chemical composition of the product;
3. Hazard description;
4. First aid measures;
5. Fire fighting measures;
6. Leakage treatment measures;
7. Handling and storage;
8. Exposure and personal protection;
9. Physical and chemical properties;
10. Chemical stability;
11. Toxicity
12. ecological information
13. Disposal method
14. Transportation
15. Regulations and standards
16. Other information
The above 16 items are international MSDS versions.
MSDS, product test report and production technology description are equal to the important data of supply chain information transmission in product production. There are special provisions for MSDs in the EU reach system (Annex II). MSDS is one of the necessary technical data for export products.
Necessity of MSDs:
1. MSDS is not for hazardous chemicals. For example: LDPE, SiO2, alloy materials, food contact materials all need MSDs.
2. MSDS is listed as a part of supplier quality control and plays a certain role in safety production. In general, MSDS of dangerous goods shall be posted in the warehouse of dangerous goods in the factory.
3. MSDS is based on the assessment of chemicals in the product. The safety data of products with chemical changes in the production process of raw materials need to be reevaluated based on the MSDS of raw materials and the actual product performance. For example: the glue used in leather shoes production has certain harm before use as liquid, and the curing harm and danger decrease after bonding, and the chemical properties change.
4. The safety of MSDs material proportion change needs to be reevaluated. For example: paint thinner. It is composed of acetone, toluene, petroleum hydrocarbon and other compounds. Although it is a physical mixture, its chemical properties should be reevaluated.
5. If it only involves manual packaging and assembly (no chemical change), the customer can collect MSDS of raw materials into a book. For example, the key manufacturer can provide MSDS of the key embryo to the key embryo manufacturer.
MSDS professionalism
All countries in the world, such as the United States, Canada, etc., have fixed requirements for MSDs of commodities.
MSDS required by OSHA
Item 1: manufacturer and contact information
Item 2: hazardous chemical components
Item 3: physical and chemical properties
Item 4: combustion and explosion data
Item 5: reaction activity data
Item 6: health hazard data
Item 7: safe operation and usage
Item 8: protection methods
WHMIS requirements in Canada
Item 1: product name and manufacturer information
Item 2: hazardous chemical components
Item 3: physical characteristics
Item 4: fire or explosion data
Item 5: reaction activity data
Item 6: toxicological characteristics
Item 7: preventive measures
Item 8: first aid
Item 9: preparation information
The text description used in MSDS is a fixed statement as standard description, the rating of hazard and toxic and harmful substances used is also fixed, and the identification used for hazard, toxic, harmful and protective conditions is also fixed. This is because it is easy to manage as a national customs and chemical administration. They set up a standardized database. It can be inquired after authorization and purchase so as to make MSDS of corresponding products.
